Used car buying guide: Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

In India, the Wagon R is noted for its boxy, tall-boy style, practical cabin, and fuel-efficient, zippy engines, all of which have piqued the interest of consumers since its introduction. The new Wagon R debuted in early 2019, keeping the original's concept while enhancing its basic characteristics. In terms of space and pure practicality, the new-generation Wagon R is still the car to beat in its market. However, there are a few things you should be aware of before purchasing one.

The third-generation Wagon R was introduced with two petrol engine options: a 68hp, 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine from the previous generation and, for the first time, the 83hp, 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine from the Swift. Both engines were available with a 5-speed manual or an AMT transmission. The ARAI-rated fuel efficiency number for the Wagon R 1.0 is 22.5 kpl, whereas the 1.2 is claimed to be 21.5 kpl (pre-BS6).

The 1.0-liter engine is quick and economical, and when combined with the AMT transmission, it makes a good city car. The 1.2-liter engine, on the other hand, seems more powerful and polished, and it matches the 1.0's fuel economy number.

Maruti Suzuki added the popular CNG option to the Wagon R a few months after the petrol models were released. The CNG is powered by the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, but it produces 59hp and 78Nm less. The Wagon R CNG is only available with a 5-speed manual transmission and is said to have a fuel efficiency of 33.54 km/kg.

The third-generation Wagon R was initially available in three trim levels: LXi, VXi, and ZXi. Only the LXi and VXi trims offered the 1.0 engine, while the VXi and ZXi trims offered the 1.2 engine. An extra pack was also available for the LXi and VXi trims, which included a passenger side airbag. Meanwhile, the Wagon R CNG was available in two models: LXi and LXi (O).

A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, power folding and adjustable wing mirrors with embedded turn indicators, front fog lamps, rear defogger, washer and wiper, and manual AC are included in the top-spec Wagon R ZXi. It has a driver's side airbag (ZXi variants have dual front airbags), ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors as standard safety equipment.

The 1.0-litre Wagon R is the one for you if you primarily run in the city and value fuel efficiency above all else. The 1.2-litre Wagon R, on the other hand, appears to be a more well-rounded product. In comparison to the Wagon R 1.0, the 1.2 is always alert and light on its feet. It accelerates smoothly and provides a pleasurable drive thanks to lots of power in the mid-range. And all of this comes at a negligible cost in terms of fuel efficiency.

It's advisable to search for a top-spec version of both engines when it comes to variants, especially since the Wagon R isn't the best-equipped hatchback. So the VXi variant for the Wagon R 1.0 and the ZXi variant for the 1.2 will be available.
As is typically the case with Maruti Suzuki models, consumers can expect peace of mind. In addition to Maruti's extensive service network across the country, spare parts are generally inexpensive and readily available.
